How We Do It

We have the benefit of a background in both the worlds of high-end kitchen cabinetry and that of furniture making. It’s this blend of these disciplines that give us a unique understanding and approach to the building of wall beds. And, we use furniture-grade plywoods and sustainably-grown hardwoods … no particle board, no formaldehydes and no toxic glues.  You should know that we also fit out bed cabinets with double-layered side walls for strength, integrity and to hide the hardware connections.

Joinery

It’s the mastery, too, of the time-honored techniques of dove-tail joinery, blind and through doweling, mortise and tenoning and other techniques that set us apart.

Edge Profiles

The use of certain edge profiles or treatments -- such as with bullnose and Shaker crowns and arched rails -- lend even more to the authentic look we are seeking.

Woods & Finishes

We like clear naturally finished woods, particularly maple, oak, alder, cherry and bamboo. But, we are open to stain preferences you may have and painted pieces as well. We can “match” any stain or color you like or at least come remarkably close.  Paint-grade beds feature of mix of closed-grained hardwoods sometimes from existing inventory but primarily poplar, birch and maple. If you want your bed stained tell us and we will make a sample for your approval. Distressed and crackle finishes are also possible.
Finally, all of our products are finished with the industry standard in finishes, a highly durable conversion varnish, the finish that is widely for kitchens and vanities.  It's the perfect for thing for furniture that gets handled a lot, such as the moving parts of a wall bed. And, it's easily pigmented to any color, yet is low in VOCs -- those nasty Volatile Organic Compounds -- that some other finishes release. We like it too for its satin sheen, an almost dull rubbed effect.
